Ballinrobe Mayoral candidates to be unveiled at local race meeting
Mayor Buckley to lose crown
By Ballinrobe GAA Club
It is close on 30 years since Ballinrobe last elected a Mayor – but the incumbent, Galway native Johnny Buckley, is about to see his long reign come to an end.
Three local sports clubs are teaming up to hold a Mayor Contest over the coming months, and the identity of the three candidates will be made known at the next meeting of Ballinrobe races on Tuesday, June 21st.
Ballinrobe Town AFC (BallinrobeTownAFC.com), Ballinrobe GAA Club (BallinrobeGAAClub.com), and Ballinrobe RFC will each have a candidate in the field.
The official unveiling of the contenders will be a special highlight at the June 21st race meeting. “This is certain to be an intriguing contest for the title to rule Ballinrobe,” said a spokesperson for the three clubs.
“Johnny Buckley is one of the longest serving leaders anywhere in the world. The person chosen in this contest can look forward to a lengthy term in office. Johnny ran a benign dictatorship, and we hope his successor will follow a similar model.”
Details of the fund-raising campaigns to accompany the event will also be announced in the coming weeks.
People attending Ballinrobe Races on Tuesday will be able to cast their votes, at a cost of €5, for their preferred candidate. Watch out for the colours of the three clubs on display at the Racecourse, and there is speculation that all three candidates will take to the parade ring after the second race.
Reigning Queen of the Lakes Aisling McGovern will officially launch the campaign at the Racecourse.
