Women of Ballinrobe & its Hinterland: 2nd Phase

Background

As part of our ongoing strategy to promote Ballinrobe and its hinterland’s heritage to the local community and a world-wide audience The Ballinrobe Historical Society are assembling the second phase of the project titled “Women of Ballinrobe & its Hinterland”.

Would you like to commemorate or pay a tribute?

Would you like to pay a tribute to a girl/woman, or commemorate someone who you feel was an inspiration to you growing up, or an ancestor who led the way, or somebody who contributed to their society here in Ballinrobe? They were/are women of everyday life, who’s quiet, vital contribution would not have been acknowledged publically to date; they could be with us or have passed away, be young or old.

Who is eligible?

They may have been born in the area, are at school, in the workplace or from the community; a mother, sister, aunt, cousin, neighbour, some who worked on small farms, in shops or were shopkeepers, teachers, nurses, volunteers, committee members, minders, sporting personalities, lawyers, historical figures who may have emigrated or survived the Great Irish Famine, or may have lived/worked abroad. They may simply have attended school in Ballinrobe or members of their families may have done so.

Also members of our new communities who are now living in Ballinrobe are welcome to submit also.

Where is exhibition?

We will be delighted to present these stories of women’s lives submitted by members of the community, which will be on display during the month of April 2020 at the Library here in Ballinrobe and on our website www.historicalballinrobe.com and also on The Irish Community Archive Network of the National Museum of Ireland (iCan).

Display Boards?

These stories will be printed on firm display boards which will measure approximately 91 x 38 (36” by 15”). Each one will be individually designed with a chosen strap line at centre plus two blocks of 80 word text boxes.

There will also be 2 photos if possible. Each board will link the reader to further information on our websites where there is no limit to the number of words. As an example Bridie Mulloy’s board (click to follow link) is now available to view.

Suggest some Woman?

If you would rather suggest somebody just let us know, or if you have any queries, or suggestions please contact Averil at ballinrobewomen@gmail.com and before you even ask, yes, we will be promoting men when we reach our target  of 100 women’s stories first. Hopefully these 10 stories will then be published in a book.
