Caribbean Slave Owners with a County Mayo Connection (1670-1834)

Administrator: County Mayo History & Heritage

By Dr. Michael O'Connor

This talk will examine the connections between County Mayo and historical slavery in the British Caribbean. It will consider why individuals and families with links to Mayo migrated to the Caribbean and became involved in planting and slavery. It will look at the benefits that accrued to them socially, politically, and economically through having a presence on both sides of the Atlantic. Finally, it will consider the difficulties of reconstructing the biographies of the many whose lives were stolen and identities erased by those with a Mayo connection.
