Girls from Ballinrobe Workhouse joined in the footsteps of more than 2200 young Irish girls who escaped from the Great Famine between 1848 and 1850.

Of the orphan girls sent to Australia between 1848 and 1850 approximately 137 were from Mayo and included 25 from the Ballinrobe Workhouse. They were aged between 14 and 19 years of age.

Work is currently ongoing to publish the stories of these girls.

If you know or can assist with any names or contact details it would be greatly appreciated at email: ballinrobewomen@gmail.com

Many Thanks,

Averil Staunton
