Ann Reid nee King’s parents were Mary Tierney from Loughmask and Patrick King from Cornaroya just outside Ballinrobe.

Marriage

Mary and Patrick had been married during World War II in London and set up home in Essex with Ann being the second of their four children.

Summer Holidays in Ballinrobe

As a child Ann and her family visited their Grandparents in Ballinrobe during their summer holidays and have wonderful memories of that time.

When Ann’s parents moved back to Ballinrobe in 1977 to their new home in Cavanquarter this now became a holiday destination for Ann and her family.

Building a New Home

After she raised her 3 children and having worked in the UK she moved back herself in 2001 to Ballinrobe after building her new home at Cloongowla.

Involvement with the John King Memorial

Ann duly became involved in the re-development of a project to erect a sculpture to the memory of John King, her great uncle, one of only 19 people to be awarded 2 medals for heroism in the U.S. It is located at Cornmarket.

Community Development Council

Following the successful completion of this project Ann became involved in the local Community Development Council, an umbrella group that supports other groups in a variety of events and projects in Ballinrobe and is currently an active committee member.

Memberships

She is also a supporter of the Ballinrobe Historical Society being the secretary of its Courthouse Project which is working to develop a multi-functional facility for both the local community and visitors to the area.

Being a member of the Town Management Team helps Ann with the communications between groups and projects ongoing in Ballinrobe and known as a ‘doer and finisher’.

Hobbies

She enjoys hill-walking, being a member of the Lake District Hillwalking Club and she also spends many happy hours walking her beloved dog Chester.
